My front door...

One of my most favorite things about my house is my front door.
My parents bought us the glass/screen front door when we first moved in, for Christmas.....I love it because I can slide the window down, let air in w/out bugs coming in......also, if you have ever driven by my home, you know that it is almost always open....well, the glass door closed, but main door open so that I can see out.....I love the light it brings in and being able to see what's going on outside.....also, I have a little water fountain on my porch that I love to listen to in the Spring/Summer.....

anyway....

my MOST favorite thing about my front door is to open the screen at around 3pm...ish...and listen for the sound of my boys coming home from school on their scooters.....I love the sound of the...dada...dada...dada...dada...dada....as the scooter goes over each break in the sidewalk....my boys are laughing/talking/joking as they ride home w/their friends.....as soon as I start to hear their scooters, I hurry to the door and stand at the door and watch them come up the sidewalk.  Their faces always light up and they are waving....and mouths are ready to explode w/something so exciting that happened that day...they can hardly wait to come in and tell me.....( I know...kind of Leave it to Beaver-ish)...don't worry...our lives are SO not perfect...who's is?

anyway....
Friday was the best.  Kai is in the top of his class in spelling, and since he was moved to that group, it has been a lot more challenging for him....he has to study a lot more on his words.....but he's doing great.......he only needed ONE more 100% on his spelling test to get to pick a prize out of the prize box...(and if you have kids, you know the prize box is so cool)...and the last two times he missed a word.......

well, the second I peeked out the door on Friday, I saw the BIGGEST smile I had ever seen on Kai's face......it was so full of happiness and energy, I knew right away what had happened.  He hurried up the walk, threw his scooter down and just exploded in excitement telling me all about his 100% on his spelling test.
He could hardly breathe.
He showed me his prize that he got to pick out (a Pokemon keychain)....
I was SO proud.
But the best part about it was that HE was so proud of himself and worked really hard to achieve a goal...and did it.  I can't think of a better feeling for a schoolchild to experience than the feeling of working so hard for something....failing a few times, but FINALLY making it.......there really is no way to teach this to your child.....but when he or she experiences it, it is such a great feeling as a parent to watch your child take pride in what he or she has done, and know that they worked hard for it.

I am so proud of my boys and how they have done in school.  It's moments like these that make them want to continue to succeed....and that they may fail a few times....but that's ok.....these are the moments you can't teach, they just have to happen.
they are learning on their own how personal acheivement feels...
and that is so great.

love you guys...
(oh, and please don't grow up)
Mom.

That was awesome- way to go Kai! I for one LOVE that he is all about spelling and that he is so self-motivated about it.

And the screen/glass door is the best.

Hey- did the HOA make you take down your flag? We got total hate-mail from them on our TX flag. Maybe they are Longhorn-haters. Why they got to hate on us out-of-staters? (haha)

I love Kai! He is such a great kid! I'm so lucky to have him as a cub scout! He is always so helpful and respectful. I know that's just a reflection on the great parents he has.

I know it has to be so exciting to see the satisfaction on their faces when they've accomplished something so great. That is something that he'll carry with him through out life. I wasn't that great of a student but to this day I remember getting 100% on a test in 7th grade science that I studied super hard for. Way to go Kai!

I love this post about your kids coming home from school and the feeling they get when they accomplish something difficult. I completely agree.

And, like you, one of my favorite things about my house is my glass door! I'm also grateful that mine doesn't let the cold in, like some that don't seal well, so I can keep it open all day if I want to.
