cheap & easy spaghetti sauce

so this may be something you do all the time anyway, but I didn't and now I do and love it. I used to go to Costco/Sam's and buy the 3 packs of Ragu spaghetti sauce or whatever...well, they are kind of pricey...so I tried something new.

I now buy the $2.50 HUGE 6lb. can of tomato sauce. I always add meat, garlic, spices, tomatoes etc. anyway, even when I bought the name brand jars of sauce.....so I decided it is MUCH cheaper to buy the large can from Costco of tomatoe sauce and add whatever I want. The first time I open the can, I make it ALL....then I freeze it in freezer ziplock bags....I divide it up and it's so nice to stick in the crockpot frozen.....and it's soooo much cheaper!! I love it because I feel like i'm making my own sauce.....and my kids/husband (same thing...j/k) love pasta, so we use it all the time on tortililini, ravioli etc......

just thought i'd share my tip...and like I said, you may already do this...but it really has saved me a lot of money and I love having it all made....it's an easy thing for the Dad to stick in the pan and warm up when the sauce is already put together :)

thats what I do!! I buy the HU-MUN-GO can from costco and jazz it up. Have you ever stewed your own tomatoes? Its so easy!! I put about 20-30 roma tomatoes in a crock pot with 2 onions chopped, 2 stalks celery chopped, 2 carrots shredded about 10 garlic cloves pounded, salt and pepper, fresh basil leaves, a generous amount of olive oil and water, and I let it simmer over night until the tomatoes and everything else look pretty soggy!!! drain the juice out. put in the blender and I have like 10 cups or so of tomatoes I either can or freeze. if I can it, I have about 3 crock pots going so the next day i have about 15 jars of tomatoes to can!! we should have a canning party!

Sharing money-saving tips is especially welcome in this economy. Everyone needs to learn to do more from scratch. We really do pay dearly for a few extra ingredients thrown in by someone else!
